Finding something unfamiliar on a child’s scalp calls for careful observation, not an automatic diagnosis. In good lighting, note its size, shape, movement, and whether it clings to hair or skin.
Take a clear photograph. Adult head lice are roughly sesame-seed-sized; their eggs stick firmly to hair shafts, unlike loose dandruff. Outdoor insects and ordinary debris can also become caught in hair. If identification remains uncertain, ask a pharmacist or pediatrician before using treatment.
An attached tick needs prompt removal: grasp it close to the skin with fine-tipped tweezers and pull steadily upward, then clean the area and your hands. Seek medical advice if removal is difficult or fever, swelling, or a spreading rash develops.
Avoid household pesticides and harsh home remedies. Confirmed lice are common and do not indicate poor hygiene. Your child needs reassurance, not embarrassment—and the safest response begins with understanding what you have actually found.
