This Gray-and-Red Insect in Your Yard May Be an Invasive Pest

One flash of red turned a routine backyard chore into an unsettling discovery. On a sweltering day, an insect resting on a maple tree looked almost beautiful, until its spotted wings opened. A quick photo and an online search raised a troubling possibility: this tiny visitor might be an invasive pest, with consequences reaching far beyond that quiet back…

The insect appeared to match a spotted lanternfly, a plant-feeding species native to Asia and first detected in the United States in Pennsylvania in 2014. Despite its name, it is a planthopper, not a true fly. Adults measure roughly an inch long, with black-spotted gray forewings and darker, patterned tips. Beneath them lie striking red, black, and white hindwings—the colorful detail that helped turn a moment of curiosity into a search for answers.

The concern goes beyond appearances. Spotted lanternflies draw sap from plants and can harm vulnerable crops, particularly grapevines. They also reach new places by hitchhiking on transported objects, sometimes as easily overlooked egg masses. Still, an unfamiliar insect should never be condemned on looks alone. Compare photographs with reliable identification guides and follow local agricultural or extension-service reporting instructions. That small pause to identify a backyard visitor correctly can help protect plants without needlessly targeting harmless insects.
