Raised in Lafayette, Indiana, Rose grew up as William Bruce Bailey, believing until 17 that his stepfather was his biological father. He later described a rigid Pentecostal household marked by physical and emotional abuse, and a painful sense that his mother would not protect him.

Yet music became a constant: church singing, piano lessons, and school choruses gave him somewhere to channel his intensity. Teachers remembered an intelligent student with a natural ability to lead.

In 1982, after repeated arrests, he left Indiana for Los Angeles.

Three years later, he helped form Guns N’ Roses, whose debut, Appetite for Destruction, eventually sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Success brought controversy rather than an uncomplicated escape.

Rose later sought therapy to confront destructive patterns rooted in his upbringing. His refusal to attend the band’s 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction underscored his determination to choose his own terms.
