Mysterious Postcard Of Comfort

I thought my mother’s postcard had rescued me from the loneliest week of my life.

Then she came home and swore she had never written it, leaving me holding a message in her unmistakable handwriting. Its words were exactly what I needed to hear, but the comfort I trusted was about to become a mystery I could never expl…

At seventeen, I expected having the house to myself to feel like freedom. Instead, a week into my family’s summer trip, the silence had become oppressive. Then a postcard arrived, apparently from Mom, announcing a two-day detour to Vermont.

Her familiar loops of ink made the empty rooms feel less frightening. When my family returned two days later, I mentioned Vermont and showed her the card. Her confusion was immediate: they had come straight home, and she hadn’t mailed anything.

The stamp was genuine, the date fit, and the writing looked right. Still, nothing explained who had sent it. No more unusual mail followed, and we found no clues. Eventually, I stopped trying to solve it.

What stayed with me was how completely I had accepted its reassurance. The postcard caused no harm, but it taught me something unsettling: when loneliness leaves us vulnerable, the appearance of care can feel as convincing as truth.
