Kayla’s disappearance dated to July 4, 2017, following a parade near her Illinois home. Her mother, Heather Unbehaun, had told Kayla’s custodial father that they were going camping, but they did not return.

Authorities subsequently issued a felony warrant for Heather’s arrest. The search eventually reached Asheville, North Carolina, where someone’s recognition of Kayla from the Netflix series helped bring years of uncertainty to an end. She was located safely and reunited with her father.

Heather was arrested in North Carolina on an Illinois fugitive warrant and initially held on a $250,000 bond. After posting bail there, she later surrendered in Illinois, where she was reported to be in custody without bail.
