Christa Pike is running out of time. In weeks, the state plans to kill her. The only woman on Tennessee’s death row, condemned for a sadistic murder at 18, is now 50 – and terrified. Not of dying, but of how it will happen. After a childhood of rape and torture by men, her final request is shat…

As the execution date approaches, the legal arguments and public outrage circle around the same brutal facts: an unspeakable murder, a shattered 19-year-old victim, and a teenager turned into a symbol of pure evil. Yet behind the headlines is a woman who grew up being violated by men, starting at age five, then again at eleven, then once more at seventeen. Those assaults, and the mental illness that followed, were never fully heard by the jury that chose death for her.

Now, with the clock ticking toward September 30, her lawyers are begging for two kinds of mercy: to spare her life, or at the very least to spare her from being pinned down by male officers as needles are pushed into her arms. Tennessee has not promised to honor that request. Somewhere between justice for Colleen Slemmer and compassion for a deeply damaged perpetrator, the state must decide what cruelty it is still willing to allow in the name of punishment.
