Garden Memory Returned

“Mommy, when you were little and I was a man, we danced in the garden behind the white tree.” His words returned me to my grandfather’s tall white oak, where an old radio played as we turned barefoot through the grass.

Those afternoons belonged to a private corner of my childhood. Then my son mentioned my yellow dress, the spinning, and my quiet plea: “Don’t let me go.” I had never shared those memories with him.

When he reached up and touched my cheek, I began to cry. His calm certainty unsettled me, but it also brought an unexpected tenderness, as though a familiar comfort had briefly returned.

I could not explain his words, and nothing that happened proved what they meant. Holding him that night, I stopped searching for an answer.

The mystery remained, but alongside it came peace: remembering my grandfather while holding the child I loved.
