Found this hard, foam-like brown structure attached to a fence post in the backyard

One careless scrape could destroy a hidden nursery. That strange brown lump clinging to your fence may look like something to throw away, but its hardened shell could be sheltering dozens of lives waiting for warmer days. Before you reach for a tool, take a closer look at the quiet backyard mystery hiding a surprisingly delicate and extraordinary secr…

A firm, tan, foamlike structure attached to a twig, shrub, or fence may be a praying mantis egg case, called an ootheca. A female produces froth around her eggs, which hardens into a protective casing. Depending on the species, it can hold dozens to hundreds of eggs. In many temperate regions, these survive winter before tiny mantises emerge in spring, looking like miniature adults and soon dispersing into surrounding vegetation to hunt.

There is usually no reason to scrape away a confirmed mantis egg case. Mantises eat many insects, including garden pests, although they also consume pollinators and other beneficial species. If the casing faces damage, move the twig it rests on to a sheltered outdoor spot nearby, preserving its original orientation. Avoid bringing it into a warm house, which can trigger premature hatching. When identification is uncertain, ask a local extension service—the little discovery deserves understanding before action.
