The quiet morning encounter appeared to have a name: a hammerhead worm, a terrestrial flatworm also known as a land planarian. Its widened, shovel-like head was the strongest clue, alongside its elongated body and dark lengthwise markings.

Unlike an earthworm, this animal moves with a smooth, gliding motion. What initially seemed like grass caught on its head was apparently part of the creature itself—a detail that turned an ordinary outdoor moment into something unforgettable.

Keeping my distance was sensible, but there was no reason to panic. Some hammerhead flatworms produce potent toxins, so avoid handling them with bare hands and keep pets from eating them.
