A small dimple just in front of the ear is often a preauricular pit, a congenital feature that forms as the outer ear develops during pregnancy. When those tissues do not join completely, a narrow tract can remain beneath the skin.

Pits may appear on either side or both, sometimes running in families. For most people, they are simply an anatomical variation: they cause no discomfort, generally leave hearing unaffected, and need no treatment.

Problems can arise when bacteria enter the tract. Redness, tenderness, swelling, or pus should prompt medical advice, especially with fever or a rapidly growing lump. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics, drain an abscess, or discuss surgery if infections keep returning.
