Richard Lewis’s death at 78 closes the curtain on a singular, restless, unforgettable voice in American comedy.

From the smoky clubs of the 1970s to the sharp, unsparing spotlight of Curb Your Enthusiasm, he turned his own anxiety, heartbreak, and neuroses into something electric and human.

His self-deprecating style didn’t just make people laugh; it made them feel less alone in their own chaos.

In his final years, Lewis spoke candidly about Parkinson’s disease, even as he kept working, writing, and connecting with audiences who had grown up with his voice in their living rooms.

The heart attack that took him was sudden, but the legacy he leaves is anything but fleeting: generations of comics shaped by his rhythm, fans carrying his lines in their memories, and a body of work that still feels painfully, beautifully alive.
