At Nearly 103, Hollywood’s Beloved Veteran Continues to Inspire Fans

The spotlight moved on, but Ray Anthony refused to leave the music behind.

From Glenn Miller’s orchestra to national fame and a marriage to a Hollywood actress, his life unfolded far beyond the bandstand.

As changing tastes pushed swing aside, the trumpeter kept playing, carrying a beloved American sound toward another generation while facing the challenge of staying rele…

Born Raymond Antonini in 1922, Ray Anthony grew up in a musical household, with a bandleader father who helped nurture his early trumpet playing. Experience with major orchestras, including Glenn Miller’s, prepared him to lead his own ensemble.

By the early 1950s, the Ray Anthony Orchestra had found national success with polished arrangements that balanced swing traditions and contemporary appeal. “Bunny Hop” became one of his best-known recordings, while television and film appearances brought his talent to audiences beyond the dance floor.

His private life drew attention, too. During the 1950s, Anthony married actress Mamie Van Doren, and they welcomed their son, Perry Ray Anthony, before the marriage ended.

As rock and roll reshaped popular entertainment, Anthony continued recording and performing without surrendering his big-band roots. His enduring contribution was not simply a familiar dance tune, but a living connection to an era whose sound he helped carry forward across generations.
