An ordinary Manhattan afternoon ended with two lives lost.

A car mounted the curb and struck pedestrians, leaving a street in chaos and a 61-year-old driver in handcuffs.

Now, as investigators examine what happened and families face devastating grief, one terrible question hangs over the shattered calm: how did a routine walk become a tragedy still waiting for ans…

Investigators worked through the aftermath, examining skid marks, gathering broken vehicle parts, and reviewing surveillance footage to reconstruct the crash.

A medical emergency and mechanical failure were among the possibilities being considered, but the cause remained unresolved. Officials said there was no evidence of a deliberate attack.

The driver’s presence in handcuffs offered no explanation on its own, leaving the circumstances under investigation while relatives of those killed and injured waited for answers.

Near the barricades, New Yorkers stopped with flowers and prayers, confronting the fragility of an everyday journey through their city. For grieving families, official reassurance could not soften the loss, and uncertainty added another burden to the shock.

The investigation may eventually establish what sent the vehicle onto the sidewalk. What it cannot do is return the people who died, undo the injuries, or give those affected the uneventful afternoon they had every reason to expect.
