I wanted the evening to make my girlfriend feel celebrated. Instead, our waiter responded dismissively to a shellfish allergy question, left our water glasses empty, and offered little explanation when we were moved from a cozy corner to a noisy table near the kitchen.

Watching him warmly attend to nearby diners made the contrast harder to ignore. I settled the $180 check but left no tip. When he said, “You forgot the service fee,” I answered calmly: “The service didn’t earn one.”

There was no shouting, just an uncomfortable moment we later talked through together. We agreed that avoiding conflict shouldn’t require pretending everything had been fine.

The manager subsequently called, listened to our account, apologized, and invited us back. We appreciated the acknowledgment but never returned.
