Christa Pike ‘very likely brain damaged’ after surviving 2 lethal injections as doctor issues update

An execution reportedly ended not in death, but in a hospital bed.

Christa Pike’s reported survival after two lethal injections has brought a chilling warning from a doctor involved with her legal team: she could face lasting brain damage.

With officials defending their procedures and attorneys challenging their account, the question of what happened demands urgent and difficult ans…

Christa Pike was supposed to have been executed

According to the report, Christa Pike was hospitalized after receiving two doses of pentobarbital during a scheduled September 30 execution in Tennessee.

Her attorney said she remained conscious after the second dose, while witnesses described distress inside the chamber. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for murdering 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

The execution would reportedly have been Tennessee’s first involving a woman in more than two centuries.

Dr. Joel Zivot, an Emory University physician who has worked with Pike’s attorneys, reportedly told the BBC that delayed resuscitation could have caused brain injury. That warning describes a possible complication, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Tennessee corrections officials maintained that the execution team followed the state’s approved protocol, while her lawyers disputed that account. The report leaves critical questions unresolved: what caused the procedure to fail, when medical intervention began, and whether Pike will experience lasting harm.
