A damaged charger can turn an ordinary night into an emergency.

A viral account describes a Mexican family fleeing smoke and flames, with a frayed cable and a crowded power strip blamed for the devastation.

But behind the terrifying story lies a question every household should confront before bedtime: could an overlooked electrical hazard become your next living nigh…

The supplied account describes a household in Iztapalapa escaping an overnight apartment fire after a relative noticed burning plastic. It attributes the blaze to damaged charging equipment connected to a power strip behind a sofa.

However, it provides no verifiable reporting or official findings establishing the incident or its cause. The family’s alleged losses are heartbreaking, but those details should not be mistaken for confirmed facts. The broader electrical safety concern still deserves serious attention.

Replace frayed cables and chargers that work only when bent or held in position. Choose compatible equipment that meets recognized safety standards, keep it uncovered and away from flammable materials, and never exceed a power strip’s rated capacity.

Several connected devices do not automatically mean an overload; their combined demand matters. Maintain working smoke alarms. If fire breaks out, evacuate, stay outside, and call emergency services. Never pour water onto burning equipment that remains energized.
