I kept thinking about that small, broken body on the sidewalk, how it lay there like a warning no one wanted to read.

In the weeks that followed, reports of snakes in unlikely places turned into a quiet chorus: behind flowerpots, near sandpits, coiled in the cool shadows of stairwells. They weren’t monsters invading our lives; they were refugees from a world we had steadily paved over.
