A hole opened in the sky and the internet lost its mind.
Some saw a portal. Others whispered about secret weapons or hidden worlds.
But the truth behind this glowing ring of clouds is stranger, and far more beautiful, than any conspiracy theory you’ve read. It begins with invisible ice, a passing plane, and a sky ready to brea…

What looked like a supernatural gateway glowing in the clouds was almost certainly a fallstreak hole, sometimes called a hole‑punch cloud. These rare formations occur in mid‑level cloud layers filled with supercooled water droplets—liquid water hanging in the air even though the temperature is below freezing. All it takes is a small trigger to flip that delicate balance.

When an aircraft slices through that cloud deck, the sudden drop in pressure and temperature around its wings or propellers can force those droplets to freeze into ice crystals. Once freezing begins, the surrounding droplets evaporate, carving out a widening circular gap that looks eerily precise from the ground. Sunlight pouring through that opening turns it into a bright, otherworldly ring. Far from evidence of the uncanny, fallstreak holes are a reminder that the atmosphere is both fragile and astonishing—proof that nature doesn’t need the supernatural to leave us speechless.
