Recognizing Warts and Choosing Safer Treatment

A small bump on the skin can be a wart, but appearance alone is not enough to identify every growth. Warts are caused by human papillomavirus, often shortened to HPV. They commonly occur on the hands and feet and may feel firm or rough. Verrucas are warts on the feet; pressure from walking can make them uncomfortable. A new mark should not automatically be treated as a wart if you are uncertain what it is.

Recognizing the limits of home treatment

The NHS explains that warts and verrucas are usually harmless and can disappear without treatment, although this may take months or years. Pharmacy treatments are available, but they also take time and do not work for everyone. Choosing to monitor a painless wart can be reasonable, while a painful, troublesome, or uncertain lesion is worth discussing with a health professional.

Avoid picking or scratching a wart. Wash your hands after touching it, and do not share towels or other personal items that contact the affected skin. Keep feet clean and change socks regularly. These practical measures help reduce opportunities for spread, although they cannot guarantee that another wart will not develop. A pharmacist can advise whether a product is suitable for the location involved.

When to ask a dermatologist

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends professional assessment when you are unsure that a growth is a wart, or when it is changing, painful, itchy, burning, or bleeding. Warts on the face or genitals also need a different approach from routine home treatment. People with a weakened immune system or diabetes should seek advice rather than treating a suspicious lesion on their own.

For one or a few small, familiar warts in an appropriate location, over-the-counter salicylic acid may be an option. Follow the product instructions carefully. The academy advises checking with a dermatologist before using it if you have diabetes, neuropathy, or poor circulation. Stop treatment and seek guidance if significant irritation, pain, bleeding, or blistering occurs. More treatment is not necessarily better, and using several harsh products together can injure surrounding skin.

What treatment at a clinic may involve

A clinician will usually examine the growth and ask about its history. The academy notes that a biopsy may be appropriate for a lesion that grows rapidly, resembles an open sore, or fails to respond to treatment. This is one reason not to keep treating an uncertain bump indefinitely: the diagnosis may need to be reconsidered.

Professional treatments include salicylic acid and cryosurgery, which freezes the wart. Freezing can require several appointments and may cause discomfort or changes in skin color. The right choice depends on the wart, its location, and the person being treated. Home freezing products are not the same as the treatment a dermatologist provides in a clinic, so their results and instructions should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

A safer approach to persistent bumps

An online photograph cannot confirm your diagnosis, and a dramatic caption cannot determine how urgently a particular growth needs attention. Keep track of when it appeared and whether it changes. Bring those details, along with any products you have already used, to a pharmacist or clinician. Getting the identification right is the useful first step; choosing an appropriate treatment comes after that.
