The palace announced in February 2024 that cancer had been discovered after the King underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate. Officials did not disclose the type of cancer. Operation Menai Bridge would begin with private notifications. The prime minister and senior officials would be informed before a public announcement. Catherine would become queen consort, and the line of succession would continue through Prince George.
