Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez was celebrating evening Mass at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil on October 17 when a crucifix broke loose from the wall above him and struck him. Parishioners rushed forward and called emergency services, but he died from his injuries. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death, identifying him as the church’s parish priest and a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. The cause of the collapse remained unclear.

Shortly before the accident, Sánchez had told those gathered, “One day, all of us here will also die.” His reflection urged them to value time with God, their spouses, children, families and others. In the aftermath, community members cautioned against describing his death as punishment or claiming to know why it happened. Their appeal was for prayer and compassion—a way to honor a priest whose closing message emphasized the preciousness of time shared with others.
