The Christmas I Rented The Fire Hall

After thirty-one Christmases at her table, Nancy was given two hours at someone else’s.

Her son read the rules aloud: arrive at two, leave by four, bring nothing—and she swallowed the words that could split his family. But alone with her late husband’s gravy boat, she remembered something painful about herself, then asked a question that pointed somewhere unex…

Nancy, a sixty-four-year-old widow in Two Harbors, had agreed when her daughter-in-law, Amber, wanted to host Christmas. The restrictions that followed hurt deeply, but Nancy refused to make Greg choose between his wife and his mother.

After their call, she finished making lefse and sat with a chipped family heirloom. In the quiet, another memory surfaced: for eleven years, she had dismissed Amber’s offers to contribute dinner. Once, Amber brought a pear salad anyway. Nancy placed it behind the bread basket, where it went unnoticed until cleanup.

That realization did not excuse the rigid invitation. It did, however, complicate Nancy’s hurt: she had wanted to be generous without noticing how little room she left for anyone else.

Remembering Leonard, her husband of many years and a longtime volunteer firefighter, she wondered who else would spend Christmas alone. Her thoughts turned toward the local fire hall, its kitchen, and its folding tables.
