It was a cold Tuesday morning, around the eleventh hour of my daughter’s operation.

I sat alone with a vending-machine sandwich I had bought hours before, unable to take a bite. There was nothing remarkable about it, yet I kept looking at it.

Buying food had been something I could do. Eating it was another matter. My daughter was still in surgery, and I had no way to make the waiting end.

Her surgery was not over. Neither was my uncertainty. But somewhere in those hours, my understanding of being her parent had shifted, quietly and in a way I would carry afterward.
