Before they could escape together, I invited her husband to dinner, ready to make them face the full, devastating trut…
After seven years of marriage, I believed Mike when he claimed he had wrecked his boss’s car. The money came from the $15,000 my grandmother had left me. But his supposed emergency funded a $7,983 getaway with Sarah, our neighbor.
His boss confirmed there had been no accident. At dinner with Sarah and her husband, Edward, I mentioned Mike’s upcoming “business trip.” Edward innocently shared that Sarah was visiting Miami with friends.
Their reactions exposed what neither would admit. I left to stay with a friend.
While Mike went on the trip, I filed for divorce. He later lost his job and ended up sleeping on other people’s couches. Sarah returned to Edward, but their marriage remained fragile.
I found a small apartment, bought plants and secondhand furniture, and enrolled in photography classes. Starting over hurt, but those ordinary choices helped me build a life that felt like mine again.
