An empty home can develop an unpleasant welcome, especially during a long, warm absence. Water held in plumbing traps normally blocks sewer gases, but that protective seal can weaken as water evaporates.
Meanwhile, residue inside drains can support drain flies and contribute to smells. Before leaving, clean your kitchen and bathroom sinks, remove debris around the drains, and run water through each fixture to replenish its trap. Wipe the basins dry once you have finished.
One suggested extra precaution is laying a paper towel over the drain and placing an upside-down glass on top. It may provide a physical obstacle, but it is not an airtight seal or a proven replacement for a properly fitted stopper and functioning plumbing trap.
